King
Lear is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare and
published on 1606.This play is written in old English making it a bit difficult
for the readers of 21st century.
The story involves a king and
his three daughters. The king is getting old and is ready to retire his kingdom
and distribute the land amongst his 3 daughters. He wants to hear what they
have to say.The first two daughters begin by uttering statements of extreme
love to their father and being so gullible he accepts and gives them one third
each of the kingdom. The final daughter, the youngest, proudly tells her father
that her others daughters are lying through their teeth and that they only love
him because of the fortunes he is giving them.
The other subplot involves a
father and 2 brothers. The two brothers are fighting for a high ranked position
within the kingdom and one of the brothers blackmails the other in order to
make him look better.
There are other tiny subplots
that are involved yet the main theme rests upon the classic conflict between
the Good and the evil and the relationship between appearance and reality.
I would suggest that any
literature-adventurer should surely read this as there is a use of Old English
and he has also used a blend of verse and prose which makes the book much
interesting to read.
It’s a great book for some gruesome scenes, a
drama like play.
