“It was
the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was
the age of foolishness ... it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of
despair”
So begins A Tale of Two Cities
A
Tale of Two Cities is a historical novel by Charles Dickens, set in London and
Paris. A clear depiction of the historical French Revolution and the reign of terror.
It’s interesting as the scene shifts from one city to other in a story of
brutality on one side and love, idealism and self-sacrifice on the other. There’s
also an interesting twist in the climax
of the plot.
Honestly,
it took some time for me to understand the first chapter as the language used
is a bit difficult, but as we proceed, we are able to figure things out.
Also,
I loved the character Lucie Menatte as she is the golden thread who ties
together all the other characters. And finally, the last third chapter is impossible
to stop reading as the tension increases and the end is just incredibly moving.
Overall,
for me, reading this novel was a pleasing experience as there are many characters
who cover significant emotional ground in their to love one women as best they
can.
