Book Review by Humera Riyaz Khan , Roll No 31/SY.B.ED 2019-21.
“Emma” is a romantic comedy by Jane Austen with a lot of one-sided romances and love
triangles to it.
The plot is
extremely amusing and captivating and I truly found it a real page turner. It
is full of wit. Austen uses irony to mock the elites of her time and also depicts
how women of that group led their lives.
One
character that I admired throughout the story is Mr Knightley- the only
character who sees things clearly and
pragmatically. He's got a humorous strike to him, is warm and respects others opinions. He’s sympathetic and protective of women
in the community and mostly of Emma. Even though he frequently disapproves of
her behaviour, he dotes on her.
Emma's character
was not much likeable initially but as the story progresses one cannot deny the
immense development of her character. I found her to be likeable quite a fair
bit because she seems to be relatable. Even though she’s rich, clever and
thinks she knows best, her intentions are good and she only wants what is best
for everyone. She goes through moments of self awareness throughout the book
and a lot of them are spurned on because of Mr Knightley and his relationship
with her.
The only
thing was that the ending felt like it
should have ended a little bit sooner than it did maybe a couple of chapters
before.
