Book Review of Romeo and Juliet –William Shakespeare
Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare is one of the most well-known romantic play writes ever written. This book brought Shakespeare great popularity during his times which is in the 1590’s.
The book is about romance between two teenagers
(Romeo and Juliet) who fall in love even though there are discrepancies between
their families. The play opens with a lot of violence. The Montague and Capulet
families keep having conflicts with each other. Romeo is madly in love with Rosaline, however
after attending the Capulet family feast he falls in love with Juliet as soon
as he lays eyes on her. Ironically the story turns into a tragedy with the
death of both the protagonists in the end. The main idea of the play is to say that, people
in love do not necessarily have a happy ending. Romeo and Juliet are prepared
to sacrifice their lives for one another.
The book gives the readers different
perspectives about the ideas of romance, beauty, gender roles, conflicts and
everlasting love. The book teaches us, as readers, to appreciate what we have
and the people we have in our lives keeping aside the conflicts. This is
because, it costs about 6 deaths of different characters including the main
ones for the two families to realize that conflict is futile and can only lead
to tremendous loss.
As a reader of the 21st
century, I find, the idea of love to be portrayed in a very utopian manner as
both the main characters decide that they want to get married just after meeting
once. The book perpetuates and glorifies the idea of ‘Love at first sight’.
Juliet comes across as a very strong
character because she is fearless in the pursuit of what she wants. I find the
character of the nurse to be very genuine and flexible, she wants nothing but
the best for Juliet and is very supportive.
The
play has been able to engage readers for centuries now. One of my take-aways
from this book is that there is great strength
in love. Although, they are not
united on Earth, the idea is, that by sacrificing their lives they will be one
in spirit.
Though the play turns into a tragedy with
the death of the main characters, Shakespeare
makes sure that he ends the play on a positive note by uniting the two families
who swear to never have conflicts again.
