Postscript – Cecelia Ahern

Book Review of Postscript – Cecelia Ahern

“Shoot for the moon and even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”

This opening line of the novel very much sets the tone of the novel for the reader. It teaches us to aim higher and even if we fail, there’s always a second chance.

‘Postscript’ is the sequel of one of the famous novels ‘P.S. I Love You’, written by Cecelia Ahern. ‘P.S. I Love You’ is a beautifully written novel which became a bestseller as well as a major motion picture, almost 10 years ago. However, that novel was just the beginning of a new journey, which late Gerry planned out for his loving wife, Holly, through breath taking letters written by him, that reached Holly every month, after he died.

‘Postscript’ sheds light on the life of Holly, seven years after Gerry dies. It shows her life in a new perspective and how much she’s moved on with her life, after Gerry. But her life takes an unexpected turn when she does a podcast about her ‘P.S. I Love You’ letters written to her by Gerry and within months, she becomes the guiding member of the P.S.I Love You club, started by 5 terminally ill people. She helps them leave behind a souvenir, in the form of letters, videos for their loved ones so that their families feel their presence always. Though Holly didn’t like the idea and felt she would go back to longing for Gerry and the painful memories of his death, she eventually grew closer to the members, helped them and finally sat with each one as they bid goodbye to the world. Hence, sometimes an end marks a new beginning and surely There’s always one more thing to say…

This book is truly touching and it very much speaks about how much difference one person can make in our lives and how much different our lives become when they leave us forever. One thing I like about Gerry and Holly is their unconditional love that continued even after he died. His greatest gift to Holly was starting the ‘P.S. I Love You’ Club, which made her feel Gerry’s presence and his guidance. And it gave me the hope that every person I meet along the journey of my life is just a chapter, and there will be many more… I would like to end this review with my favourite quote which is the reality of many of our lives:

“I’ve come to believe that the different times in our lives we are drawn to certain people for various reasons, mainly because that version of ourselves is connected to that version of them at the particular time. If you stick at it, work at it, you can grow in different directions together. Sometimes you get pulled apart, but I believe there is the right person, the one, for all different versions of yourself.”

P.S. See you later?
