Book Review of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
Before reviewing the novel itself, it is worth pausing to consider its title. The title, named after the narrator, indicates that the story is organized around Jane and her experiences, which is an early feminist novel set in the Victorian era.
Jane Eyre revolves around the life experiences of its protagonist and
the narrator of the novel. A brief knowledge about Charlotte Brontë’s
life helps readers in interpreting the novel better. Brontë has created her protagonist such that she is different
from the conventional middle-class who might read the text and also from the
traditional literary portrayals of such a woman.
Jane is a principled
woman who has been brought up with hardships and little love and affection.
Throughout the novel, Jane seeks a place where she can be at peace. Unlike most
writers who have a tendency to create the female protagonists of great beauty,
Jane’s appearance is not a driving force in the novel. Rather, it is her
diligence, kindness and sense of morality thar rise to the forefront of the
story.
Jane Eyre depicts the conflicts between love and independence, conscience and passion and the struggle of a young woman to maintain her self-esteem. A quote from the novel that truly characterizes Jane Eyre goes like, “I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will.” I appreciate the power of the book in engaging its readers and endures as a much-loved classic.
