“KIM” by Rudyard Kipling

Book Review of “KIM” by Rudyard Kipling

The book “KIM” by Rudyard Kipling is a story on travelogue and partly adventures. The whole story revolves around an English boy who lives a life of an orphan. The story is during the British colonial rule in India. It picturizes how the boy’s life takes a turn and how he is used as a Spy in the upcoming war during the British time.

The story tells us the feeling of each character of the story but seems to focus more on the character of the boy “Kim”. When he meets a wandering Tibetan Lama who is in search of a sacred river, Kim becomes his follower and proceeds on a journey covering the whole of India. In his travel throughout the subcontinent gives him opportunity to describe the various peoples and cultures that India is made of, and a significant portion of the novel is devoted to such spectacular snapshots of the range of people or the beauty of the landscape, drawing attention to the size and diversity in his descriptions.

The story makes me feel sad, how an orphan “Kim” who is bright and gifted with special language skills and knowledge of the local culture becomes an unlikely British spy and how the characters involved tries to take all possible benefit out of the boy by using him for their work, instead of developing the skills of the child for making him a good citizen of the country use his skill for the larger good of others.

I personally feel that it’s a good book to read and people in any age group can read as the book gives an idea of people during the British colonial times. Nature lovers will like it as the beauty of India which has been described by the author makes you feel as though you have travelled to those places and viewing the nature beauty.

Rudyard Kipling is known for his writing and has won Nobel Prize. His writing has a good blend of suspense and tragedy and describes the character and natural beauty fabulously. He has written books for children as well as adult and hence I feel people from all age groups can enjoy his stories.
