Book Review of All’s Well that Ends Well by William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare is one of the greatest writers of the Era. And has contributed many incredible stories and novels in his name. And so is All’s Well that Ends Well is one of Shakespeare’s well known writings.
It is actually a
quasi comedy here, because it might look a little rough on the pages but it technically
has a happy ending. The tone of the poem is not actually going in with comedy.
The story is about
a young girl named Helena whose father was a physician for Count Rosillian and the King is ill. But Helena’s father had
expired. So continuing his duties and rights Helena used to visit them on
behalf of his father. But in the meanwhile, the Countess’s son Bertram whose
father also died goes to court to give his name under the kings list. Then
Doing what she does Helena had cured the King and so the king gives her a
decision to make as to whom she wants to pick or she desires to be her husband.
Helena was
actually in love with Bertram, and so she picks up kings offer for Bertram. However
Bertram is not interested in Helena and so he leaves her and proceeds for the war
without consummating the marriage. Bertram has written Helena a letter saying
he will only return to her only when she does few things which are next to
impossible. He tells that she has to get his family ring off his finger and she
has to be pregnant with his child. And so Helena, with her friend Diana, makes
a plan and tricks Bertram at night and sleeps with him and meanwhile she also
gets to remove the ring from his finger. In the end finally, Bertram lives with
Helena and fortunately because of the trick she is pregnant with his child, and
so all’s well that I I I found Helena to be quite manipulative as the only
thing she wanted in life was to be with Bertram even though he didn’t like her.
Or can say he was not willing to be with her. That is the reason he too gave
her things to do which were next to impossible but still she did it. Furthermore,
she goes through great lengths to force Bertram in to being with her. Its
entrapment. But people would also disagree saying that Bertram was foolish and
insulting the girl who loved her immensely. He was also running away from his
responsibilities. However, I see him as an unfortunate man who didn’t have his
own rights to choose a partner for himself. But it’s also at the same good to
see how Helena was madly in love with Bertram and could do anything to get him.
I would definitely love to watch this play onscreen because of the kind of curiosity and love it has and how well William Shakespeare has put everything together. Because finally it’s a happy ending and All’s well that ends well.
