Book Review of The Viewing Room by Jacquelin Gorman
‘THE
VIEWING ROOM’ is the story around two chaplains who works in the hospital in
Los Angels. As the title indicates it is the room where people see last time
their beloved ones after death. This book includes nine chapters, describing on
a particular incident and pictures the feelings of each character. And it is in
a chronological order arranged as Henrietta starts her job at the hospital till
she leaves the job.
Henrietta the chaplain of the hospital, who had
lost her mother and brother later she takes up the job in the hospital. She
shows great kindness towards all the patients as well as the relatives of the
victims. In first incident, she baptizes a dead infant and she joins with
feelings of the family of the child. She also becomes friendly with one woman
Birdie who was suffering with so much pain and was dying a slow. She assisted
and served as a chaplain at her death bed.
Henrietta regains her faith in God as she was lost it in one point of
life.
I
felt all the characters which portrayed in this book were real and well developed.
As a human most of them undergo these stages. The book makes us to cry. When we
read the book we feel as if we are in those circumstances. Death is always a
painful. To witness and assist the death person is unbearable. I liked the
ending part of this book which gives peace and happiness in readers. In last
chapter “Safe Surrender” we see a baby found abandoned in viewing room and the
chaplains take further steps to find a new home for the child. In first chapter
we dealt with dead infant but in last it brings out a child with full of life.
Jacquelin
Gorman is known for her writing. She has
a poetic style. I personally feel it is a good book to read it.
