Book Review of Mansfield Park, by Jane Austen
Mansfield Park, a novel by Jane Austen that was first
published in July 1814.
The Protagonist, Fanny Price comes from a poor family but is
raised by her rich uncle and aunt-Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram at Mansfield Park. Her
cousin Edmund is her only ally. When Sir Thomas, her uncle, is away on business
in Antigua, Mary Crawford and her brother Henry arrive in the neighbourhood,
they both are attractive and cheerful, and soon become members of Mansfield
circle.
As her female cousins compete for Henry’s affections.Fanny
has innocently fallen in love with Edmund but Edmund falls for Mary Crawford.Fanny
remains doubtful of the Crawford’s intentions and finds herself more isolated.
Edmund has finally seen through Mary, who has admitted that she would really
like to ascertain Tom die in order that Edmund might be heir. He is
heartbroken, but Fanny consoles him. Maria and Henry eventually split, and she
goes to live with the evil Mrs. Norris. Julia and Yates are reconciled to the
family.
Edmund finally comes to his senses and marries Fanny, and
Susan,younger sister of Fanny takes her place with the Bertram’s. Edmund, Fanny
live happily at Mansfield while Henry, Mary, and Maria are cast out.
Mansfield Park is a subtle examination of interpersonal
relationships, human nature, morality and social position.
