Book Review of Persuasion by Jane Austen
Persuasion tells the story of Anne Elliott
and Captain Frederick Wentworth. Anne and Wentworth met at the age of 19 and
fell in love. Lady Elliot, Sir Walter's wife died fourteen years ago and he had
three daughters: Elizabeth, Anne and Mary. Elizabeth and Anne are single, but
Mary, the youngest, is married to a wealthy man named Charles Musgrow; they
live close by. Anne Baronet is the daughter of Sir Walter Elliott, Wentworth is
an upcoming naval officer. However, since Wentworth was an unlucky commoner,
Anne's godmother Lady Russell persuaded Anne not to accept Wentworth's
proposal.
Fast forward eight years, Wentworth is now
captain in the Royal Navy, and Anne is still unmarried. When Anne's father
Elliott has to rent a house, he and Elliott's eldest daughter, Elizabeth, go to
the bath for a while. The new tenants in Kellynch Hall are Admiral Craft and
his wife, and Mrs. Craft Wentworth's older sister. So eight years later,
Wentworth and Anne meet again. But for both of them it was not so easy. Mr. and
Mrs. Musgrove have three children: Charles (Mary's husband), Henrietta and
Louisa. Anne is nervous around him, but his actions towards her are just
detached and polite and he seems to be perfect for spending time with the
Musgrove sisters. Anne resigned herself to the idea that she had lost the love
of Captain Wentworth forever.
Captain Wentworth will soon reach Bath. He
is much richer now than he was eight years ago. Wentworth is jealous because
Anne believes she is paired with her cousin Mr. Elliott. But Anne and Wentworth
have not surpassed each other and even after almost a decade they only seek
each other out. Yet he wrote a love letter to Anne, in which she described her
true, constant, and love for her. Anne is shocked and they get engaged. Mr.
Elliott was shocked that his plan to marry Anne had failed. He and Mrs. Clay
depart from Bath; there is a rumor that they are together. Sir Walter was not
in danger of getting married under his station. Permission was granted for a
marriage between Sir Walter and Lady Russell Anne and Captain Wentworth.
Finally, persuasion is a story about first
love and second chance.
