The Hound of Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Book Review of The Hound of Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

A gripping story built around a supernatural mystery, this novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle easily surpasses all of his complete short stories around the famed detective Sherlock Holmes and his wise assistant Dr.Watson.

The death of a member of the prestigious Baskerville family, gets the entire quaint town of Devonshire talking about the curse that “hounds” the family. That a supernatural bloodhound waits to kill every member of the family who lives on the vast estate, is good enough reason for Holmes and Watson to believe that the matter needs a keen investigation when its heir Sir Henry Baskerville takes over. The shrill howls at night from the Grimpen Mire leads Watson to believe that such a hound really exists.

But there is more to it than what meets the eye and only Holmes can see through a plot that is well laid out. His suspicion roves around for clues through Watson’s narratives of the secret withheld by the family cook Barrymore, to the strange behaving neighbours, the Stapletons, who live across the moor. And as always, he hits bulls-eye when he gets a whiff of the impending danger.

The novel is an exemplary work of crime fiction and will be read by mystery lovers with the same sense of excitement each time they open the book. The book can be read from start to finish without a sense of feeling bored and leaves one satisfied with the conclusion that the mystery has been solved forever.
