BOOK REVIEW ON LADY AUDLEY’S SECRET - Mary Elizabeth Braddon
Lady Audley’s Secret is a novel based on the Victorian
time of the 1850’s. It is based on true incidents inspired by the case of
Constance Kent that took place in 1860.
It is about a woman Lucy Graham (Lady Audley) who gets
married to a rich man Sir Michael Audley but seems to be hiding something from
her past. Robert Audley the nephew of Sir Michael, sets on a mission to find
out these secrets after the mysterious disappearance of his friend George who
recently found out that his wife died after leaving him years back.
It is a mix of
murder and mysterious and the most thrilling part is that it is inspired by
true life events that happened in the 1850’s. A time when the woman didn’t have
a voice of their own. Lady Audley becomes the hero of the novel. Great work put
forth by Mary Elizabeth
Braddon. The novel was published in 1862 a time when giving such a strong role
for a female character could have been a big challenge. Though the protagonist
could be seen on negative light, it does highlight freedom and doesn’t limit a
women’s role to family.
The story kept me guessing, it didn’t lose its thrill even
for a bit. It gave so much power to woman that kept me going. Written so well,
the language is what attracts you and takes you back to those times and makes
you visualise life at the Victorian period.
Lady Audley is what kept me glued to the book but I would
give a lot of credits to the character of Robert Audley, without whom the story
wouldn’t exist. Every story needs sweet and salty and they made it happen so
well.
The novel breaks gender and class barriers, a progressive
novel. I would highly recommend anyone who is into classics and thrillers
should read Lady Audley’s Secrets, one of the best sellers of its times, keeps
you glued especially if want to have a thriller night reading before sleeping.
The novel is not too short, not too long. I hope you will enjoy reading this
novel as much as I did.
