Book Review Of EMMA By JANE AUSTEN
Firstly, I would like to talk about the author of
the novel “Emma”. Jane Austen is most famous classic author. I have read one
book earlier “Pride and Prejudice”. Her writing style is not the easiest to
read like she has the tendency to write extremely long sentences and so it is
quite difficult to grasp and also her English is old proper British English so
the vocabulary used is very high but her book is very much interesting and
enjoyable to read. She wrote 6 books in her life but all are famous as she
wrote about the life of people living in 1800’s in England. Emma was published
in the year 1815.
The book opened with “Emma Woodhouse, handsome,
clever and rich with comfortable home” Emma’s favorite hobby was match-making. The
novel is set in the fictional country and is all about marriage and social
status. The governess of Emma married to Mr. Weston and after which Emma feels
that she is perfect matchmaker and for that reason she decides to find perfect
match for a young lady Harriet and feels pity on her and so she wants to give
her a good match and decides to match with Mr. Elton by telling her to refuse
the proposal of Mr. Robert an educated man. By matching lower class women to
higher class man, she is kind of breaking the social norm or expectations of
that time and interfering in business of other people which she shouldn’t be. But
there was misunderstanding that Emma likes Mr. Elton and so he proposes Emma. Also,
Harriet loves Mr. Knightley So the novel is all about relationships whether its
friendship or family. Mr. George Knightley is another main male character and
there was something happening between him and Emma. Emma is book also about
misunderstanding and Emma as a character is not much beloved in the Austen realm
but, I found her to be very nice as even though being rich and handsome and
clever and she feels that she can match perfect, she wants best for everyone. At
a times Emma is also jealous. We can see this when her niece Jane an orphaned
but beautiful girl along with Frank a handsome son of Weston arrives Emma
actually likes Frank and for that reason, she calls Jane as ‘cold’ and
‘cautious’. Later Emma got to know that Jane and frank are engaged secretly and
so she tells Knightley that she never loved frank. Mr. Knightley also expresses
his love for Emma and so they decide t marry each other. So, there were finally
three marriages in the novel one was of Frank and Jane, the second one was of
Harriet and Robert and the third one was of Emma and Mr. Knightley.
I actually found myself really enjoying the book
“Emma”. The first reason I loved the book is because of Emma and her position
in society, as we all have desire to marry but Emma is completely different and
living her happily with lots of female friendship in this book. Austen is critiquing
her and satirizing her as this novel was written during time when novels were
just coming up. Also, it is interesting to see the style of the novel
developing in this book. This book has very enjoyable characters and not a
specific plot. Although Emma has character development which is nice to see. This
realism style of writing that came up with this Austen’s novel is now like
forerunner of style as now we see realism everywhere in contemporary books.
The second reason I loved the book most is because
it is very funny as there is lots of delicious miscommunication and some
characters lack self-awareness and this creates dramatic irony for the reader.
Especially while matchmaking it is so fun to read.
The next reason I love the book is it shows of human
insecurities so well. The very essence of romance is uncertainty as rightly
said by Oscar wild and I feel that is something really shown well in this book i.e.,
you have to vulnerable an ascertain in lots of the time.
But the book ends up making her more traditional in
her belief as opposed to more progressive so rather than thinking she is great
to match someone from lower class to higher class. she thinks wrong that she
was been wrong to mess with people’s lives and she thinks she should marry
someone and does marries.
