Book Review of The Lifeboat By Zacharey Jane
The Lifeboat is a beautiful story of an old couple found
at sea. They cannot recollect who they are or where they have come from. It is
narrated by a young interpreted from the island nation to which they are taken.
The nation is unnamed.
This young woman, who is an
orphan of the war, feels a strong empathy towards the old couple who have lost
everything. She takes up the responsibility to try to help these people so that
they can begin their journey home. Their dreams become a main focus in helping
them to unravel their past. However, it is to be seen – whether they are
revealing truth, desire, or fear? The narrator’s sense of self is challenged as
she is caught between the old couple and her boss.
The ocean in this story is a
powerful metaphor about identity and belonging, and the hopes and dreams that
define who we are. The language of the story flows with an effortless rhythm
that makes this a gentle and absorbing read.
