THE PROMISE SEED by CASS MORIARTY

Book Review on THE PROMISE SEED BY CASS MORIARTY

The author of the novel The Promise Seed is Cass Moriarty. Cass Moriarty is a fiction novelist and she lives in Brisbane and she had written the novel from Brisbane. Her debut novel The Promise Seed was selected for the Internationl DUBLIN Literary Awards in the year 2017. Cass Moriarty has written about many themes including family, friendship, love and relationship. She has also explored many other themes like loss, betrayal, loyalty, guilt and redemption. She has also worked as a volunteer in public relations and marketing department. The story that she has written about focus on the histories, memories and secrets, etc. She was an exchange student in United States. She has also said in her interviews that earlier she and her husband lived in the rural areas of Japan. She says that she likes reading and she finds joy in reading. She has also said that she like to write on thinks on which people can have discussion on and can also have a debate. She is also fond of writing. The Promise Seed novel is an excellent book written by Cass Moriarty which beautifully portrays a story of friendship. The book focuses on the relationship between the old man and the boy in which the acoustic guitar and bass, brushes and sparse piano which create a melancholy evocation of their past memories as good friends. The book talks about their helpfulness and shared labour towards each other. Though the self-analysis, self-searching behaviour of the old man and the scared life of the boy there are some instances which focuses on humour and some drama. From the novel I loved some characters and disliked others.

The setting of the novel The Promise seed by Cass Moriarty opens on a Brisbane Street in two suburban homes to find complexity in some issues of ‘family’ and ‘home’.  There are two narratives mentioned in the novel one is the old man who is 76 years old and the other is the little boy who is 10 years old. The boy is in the novel who is growing up in rural area of Queensland and the old man is in the centre of the story. The boy has learnt bitter and sad lessons all his life.

By reading the novel I have felt the weight of the boy’s and man’s story. Though their life don’t resemble any instances in my family but I found the story very relatable. The book evokes the readers to think and look deeply at their life and themselves and tell them stories about how they were raised, who had taken so much efforts to raise them? And sometimes also thinks about it was whose responsibility to see whether what we did was right or wrong.

The novel also shows an instance of child abuse and the negligence of parents on their children which might affect them mentally and emotionally. The knowledge about child abuse would be linked with the Catholic Church and the news where the child dies of child abuse and the negligence of their parents. And in the novel we can relate as Where was the child safety?  Just as the old man which is mentioned in the novel The Promise Seed.

The stories of negligence and abuse are mentioned in the suburban surface. The people are seen caught in violence, like the boy’s mother who gives permission to her boyfriend to commit dreadful acts against her and her son. Both mothers which are the characters in the novel have betrayed their sons by leaving the readers in bewilderment about which range of devil is it: neglect, emotional manipulation, etc.

From the old man’s perspective the reader is actually worried about the boy and for his future, that might resemble the old man’s life which was full of sadness, where happiness was minimal. But the old man is aware that the boy is still small and can have the opportunity of living a different life than him and in a happy way. So, to improve the boy’s life the old man starts friendship with the boy by gardening, playing chess and by planting a coriander seed. He said to the boy that the seed will rupture with possibility and for that it needs the right environment.

Here in the novel the seed is referred to The Promise of Youth.

In the novel it is stated that the right and perfect environment to nurture our child is not home but it is said that it is the place of at most danger to the boy. The home does gives comfort to the child.

In the novel they were in search of a foster family for the child. The found a biological parent for the boy from the safety agencies for child in Australia. In the novel promise seed it is portrayed that a foster family would be better for that boy were the environment would be much safer for the boy, as they would encourage and guide the boy.

The novel shows the friendship between the old man and the young boy. The novel shows the importance of friendship and the friendship between the old man and the young boy throughout the novel. The old man ponders upon his guiltiness about his past and he thinks that if he doesn’t guide the young boy then the same guilt will be the boy’s future.

Cass lifts the roofs of our houses, reveals the hypothesis of home and family, and she asks the reader to think and ponder upon how well do we treat the people around us.
