Vachan Prerna Divas 21st October2021- Workshop on Speed Reading and Mind Mapping

Vachan Prerna Divas 21st Oct. 2021- Workshop on Speed Reading and Mind Mapping

St. Teresa’s Institute of Education celebrated Vachan Prerna Divas on 21st October, 2021 at 1.50pm via zoom meeting. Vachan prerna divas is originally celebrated on 15th October every year on the birth anniversary of late Dr. A.P.J Abdul kalam who strongly promote reading. The session was in collaboration with Gandhi Shikshan Bhavan’s Surajba College of education.

The session was started by a prayer service by Ms. Upassana Sanghvi and later a brief introduction was given on vachan prerna divas and later different books were displayed Dr. APJ kalam . Later Ms. Shkuntala Nighot introduced the resource person Ms. Jyotsna Sawant. later the resource person started the workshop on speed reading techniques by sharing a google form on reading habits after this MS. Jyotsna sawant gave us imputs on benefits of reading and asked the participants to read book for 3min. later she asked the participants to share their difficulties they faced while reading for 3 minutes. After this ma’am explained us how we can calculate the reading speed. Ma’am Jyotsna asked us to read two books Seven Habits of highly effective people’ and 2 States, then asked us to calculate the speed of our reading through the formula, shared the google link with us and asked us to put it on the Google form.

Ma’am gave the technique of reading through the pointer- finger. Pictures in the books makes our reading very interesting and gives clear idea of the content. The concept of mind map was taught and how the matter can be portrait on the flow chart. Tony Buzan is the founder of mind mapping. Ma’am then asked us to draw the mind map on the drawing paper with the matter on the book ‘Seven Habits of highly effective people' which was projected on the screen. To do this mind mapping we need to note down the subheadings in the chapters in mind map format. Ma’am asked us to note down all the main chapters from book 'Seven Habits of highly effective people’ Mind mapping should be so comprehensive so that with one glance reader should get full summary of the book. Good reading habit helps us to read even the jumbled words. We skip many things while reading for example grammar like articles, adjectives, adverbs etc.

In short speed reading techniques are

  • Use pointer – finger
  • Read chuck of 4-5 words per fixation
  • Try to notice the keywords.
  • Avoid fillers like articles, supporting verbs, adverbs and conjunction
  • Avoid sub vocalization
  • Trust your mind/ instinct/institutions

After teaching the different techniques of reading Ma’am Jyotsna again asked us to read the book once again and calculate the speed and compare it with the previous. It was really helpful in our reading to increase our speed in reading and to make the reading very authentic and realistic. Ma’am also taught the uses of World web dictionary and PDF reader.

The prizes of the book review competition and best library user was announced by Dr. Cerena D’cunha . in book review competition the first was Sr. Cinthiya, second was Rohini Save and the third winner was Arlene Bose. and the first winner for best library user was Upassana Sanghvi and second winner was Ruby Sharma. Later a formal vote of thanks was given by Gayatri Joshi and then the session ended at 5.10pm with National anthem

The program was a great success with valuable information highlighting the need and importance of reading and mind mapping.

"The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari" by Robin Sharma: A Journey to Self-Discovery and Personal Transformation

Robin Sharma's "The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari" is a compelling and thought-provoking self-help book that takes readers on a transformative journey towards finding inner peace, happiness, and a more meaningful life. The book, first published in 1996, has gained immense popularity and remains a bestseller, resonating with individuals seeking a path to personal growth and fulfillment.

At its core, the book is a modern-day fable that tells the story of Julian Mantle, a successful lawyer who decides to sell all his worldly possessions, including his Ferrari, and embark on a spiritual quest in the Himalayas. The book's narrative unfolds as Julian's former colleague and friend, John, seeks to learn the wisdom Julian discovered during his transformation.

One of the book's strengths is its ability to blend storytelling with practical life lessons. The reader is introduced to a series of enlightening conversations and experiences that Julian had during his time in the Himalayas, where he learned the secrets to a fulfilling life. These lessons, referred to as "The Seven Virtues of Enlightened Learning," serve as the foundation of the book's teachings and offer invaluable insights for personal growth.

The first virtue, "Master Your Mind," emphasizes the power of our thoughts and how they shape our reality. Julian Mantle learned to control his mind through mindfulness and meditation, a practice that can help individuals reduce stress and improve their decision-making.

The second virtue, "Follow Your Purpose," underscores the importance of aligning one's actions with their deepest values and passions. By pursuing a purpose-driven life, one can find greater satisfaction and meaning in their daily activities.

"Practice Kaizen" is the third virtue, encouraging continuous improvement. Small, consistent efforts can lead to significant personal growth over time. This principle echoes the philosophy of continuous improvement and self-discipline.

The fourth virtue, "Live with Discipline," teaches the importance of cultivating healthy habits, which ultimately lead to a more fulfilling and balanced life. Discipline is the cornerstone of success and self-mastery.

"Respect Your Time" is the fifth virtue, highlighting the value of time and how it should be managed effectively. Julian Mantle's experiences in the Himalayas emphasize the importance of making the most of the limited time we have.

The sixth virtue, "Selflessly Serve Others," promotes the idea that true happiness is found in serving and helping others. This virtue reminds readers that genuine fulfillment comes from making a positive impact on the lives of others.

The final virtue, "Embrace the Present," encourages living in the moment and appreciating the beauty of each day. It stresses the significance of being fully present and mindful in all activities.

One of the notable aspects of Sharma's writing is his ability to present these profound ideas in a simple and accessible manner. The storytelling format of the book makes it relatable and engaging, allowing readers to easily connect with the characters and their transformative journeys. The principles are practical and can be applied by individuals from all walks of life, regardless of their age or background.

Furthermore, the book is not just a source of inspiration; it provides concrete exercises and action steps at the end of each chapter. These exercises help readers apply the principles in their own lives, turning theory into practice.

While "The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari" is filled with valuable insights, some readers may find the narrative a bit contrived or overly simplistic. It is important to approach the book with an open mind, as some of the concepts may b…

Written in 1677, this poetic masterpiece showcases Dryden's skill in transforming history and emotions into a narrative that continues to resonate with readers even centuries after its publication.

"All for Love" transports readers back to the dying days of the Roman Republic, as it portrays the tragic love affair between two iconic figures—Mark Antony and Cleopatra. In this carefully crafted narrative, Dryden explores their doomed relationship with a lyrical grace that captures the grandeur of the ancient world while diving deep into the human psyche. It is a masterclass in verse, featuring Dryden's poetic craftsmanship through iambic pentameter and rhyming couplets. The rich, lyrical language keeps the reader engaged, while the timeless quality elevates the play to a work of art. Dryden's ability to weave emotions and philosophical musings into the tragedy leaves the reader spellbound, showcasing his mastery in verse.
